How a Stauffer job runs

Three courses, in order, on every property

Landscape work fails at the layer you cannot see once it is finished. This is the sequence the crews run, and it is the same on a back garden wall as it is on a commercial ground.

The walk

We read the grade before we price anything

The first visit is a walk of the whole property, not a look at the one corner that bothers you. Where water leaves the roof, where it pools, how far the fall runs from the house to the line, what the soil is doing under the turf. Measurements get taken and photos get shot on that visit, because a wall priced off a guess at the grade is a wall that moves.

The build

Base first, and it is the part nobody sees

Kansas clay holds water and moves with it, so the base under a patio or a drive is the whole job. Excavation, compaction and drainage go in before a single paver is set. Walls get built as drainage systems that happen to hold soil back, using natural stone, Unilock pavers or segmental concrete block depending on what the grade and the house are asking for.

The handover

A room you use, and a crew that comes back

Hardscape work finishes as somewhere you actually sit: a fire pit, a built in grill, seat walls at the right height. Then the same company keeps it. The mowing, the fertiliser programme, the irrigation start up and winterisation all run out of one office, which is why plenty of these properties have been on the books for years rather than seasons.

Job on file

Covered patio, tiered seat walls and a fire pit, west of Topeka

Cedar posts carrying a covered roof, a paver floor laid to fall away from the house, a tiered wall holding the drop to the lawn, and lighting set into the wall courses so the steps read after dark. This is what the three courses above produce when the grade, the stone and the planting are handled by the same company.

They installed two retaining walls in our backyard and did a fantastic job! We appreciated their attention to detail and taking the time to walk through the plans. They were very organized, stayed on schedule, and would communicate with us if there were any updates. The walls look amazing and we are so excited about our new backyard!

Licensed and certified

The paperwork behind the crew

Chemical applications, irrigation tie ins and backflow all carry legal requirements in Kansas. These are the licences and memberships the company holds, and the list is complete. Ask to see any of them.

Irrigation is built from Rain Bird and Hunter Industries irrigation parts. All of our plant material is sourced locally and is brought in on a weekly basis, so what goes in the ground already handles a Kansas summer.

Questions the office gets most

The office runs Monday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and Friday mornings. Crews are out well before the phone gets picked up, so a message usually moves faster than a second call.

The shop is at 1150 Washington Street in Auburn, and the crews work Topeka, Lawrence and the surrounding area from there. If you are not sure whether your address is in range, call the office on (785) 256-7300 and ask.

Both, and they are run as two sides of the same company. One side mows, fertilises, aerates, seeds and runs irrigation through the season. The other designs and builds retaining walls, paver patios, walkways and planting beds. Plenty of properties get both.

State of Kansas Commercial Pesticide Applicator, City of Topeka Master Irrigation Installer License, Landscape Certified Irrigation Technician, Licensed Backflow Tester and Landscape Industry Certified. On the hardscape side the company is an ICPI Contractor Member and ICPI Certified Installer, and an authorised contractor for both Belgard and Unilock. Stauffer is also an A+ accredited member of the Better Business Bureau.

It starts with a consultation at the property. The site gets evaluated for drainage, measurements are taken and photos are shot, then the design is drawn back at the office and brought to you for feedback. Revisions happen before anything is dug, not after.

Plant material is sourced locally and brought in weekly, so what goes in the ground is stock that already handles Kansas conditions rather than something shipped in from a different climate and hoping for the best.

Rain Bird and Hunter Industries. The company is a licensed, certified installer and is backflow certified, which matters because backflow testing is a legal requirement on an irrigation system tied into a potable supply.

Yes. Alongside residential work the crews maintain commercial grounds, and some of those relationships have run for years across more than one property.

Monday to Thursday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and Friday 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Closed Saturday and Sunday. Crews are out on jobs well before the phone gets answered, so leaving a message is usually quicker than calling twice.
